Summer Light on Kodak Gold: A Quiet Evening with the Hasselblad 500C/M

The Space Between the Trees

There is something special about a summer evening in the Irish countryside when the light begins to soften and the landscape seems to exhale. Walking through rolling green fields and quiet woodland edges, I found myself slowing down—not because I had to, but because the scene demanded it.

The images from this walk are simple: a grassy hillside bathed in golden light, ancient trees standing watch over a narrow path, and a lone figure looking out across the landscape. Yet simplicity is often where photography feels most honest. There is no dramatic mountain range or famous landmark here. Just light, space, and the feeling of being present.

Shooting with the Hasselblad 500C/M fitted with the A16 645 back and a roll of Kodak Gold felt like the perfect combination for the occasion. Kodak Gold rendered the greens with warmth and restraint, while the medium format negatives preserved every subtle transition between shadow and sunlight. The slower process of composing each frame through the waist-level finder encouraged observation rather than reaction.

One photograph in particular stayed with me—a solitary figure standing on the hillside, surrounded by open space and evening light. It reminded me how rarely we allow ourselves moments without purpose. No destination, no task, no notification demanding attention. Just the quiet act of looking.

Photography often begins with a camera, but the real reward comes from what the camera teaches us to notice. On this walk, it wasn't the photographs themselves that mattered most. It was the stillness between them.
